RoRo Bin Hire London: When You Need One & How It Works

Need to shift a large volume of waste from a demolition, renovation, or construction project in London? This guide covers RoRo bin sizes, hire periods, pricing, and how to book the right one for your job.

RoRo Bin Hire London: When You Need One & How It Works

If you're running a large renovation, demolition, or construction project in London, a standard skip probably isn't going to cut it.

That's where RoRo bins come in.

Short for "roll on roll off," these are the big ones - 20 yards, 40 yards - designed for jobs that generate serious volumes of waste. They get rolled off the back of a lorry, sit on site while you fill them, and get rolled back on when you're ready for collection.

Here's everything you need to know about hiring one in London.

What Is a RoRo Bin?

A RoRo bin is a large, open-topped container used for high-volume waste disposal.

Unlike standard skips that get lifted onto a lorry, RoRo bins are rolled on and off using a hook loader. That's where the name comes from.

They're bigger, hold more, and are built for jobs where a 12 or 14 yard skip would fill up too quickly to be practical.

You'll see them on:

  • Demolition sites
  • Large-scale renovations
  • Commercial strip-outs
  • New build construction projects
  • Site clearances

If your project is generating more than a few tonnes of waste, a RoRo is usually the most cost-effective option.

What Sizes Are Available?

We offer two sizes:

20 Yard RoRo Holds roughly the equivalent of 200-250 bin bags. Suitable for medium-to-large projects - big renovations, commercial refits, smaller demolition jobs.

40 Yard RoRo The big one. Holds roughly 400-450 bin bags. Used for major demolitions, large construction sites, and projects generating high volumes of heavy material.

Not sure which size you need? Call us and we'll help you work it out based on the job.

How Long Can You Hire a RoRo For?

You can book a RoRo for as little as one day, or keep it on site for up to four weeks.

If you've got a large crew on site and can load it quickly, we even offer wait and load - the lorry stays while you fill it, then takes it straight away. No bin sitting on site, no extended hire period, no waiting around for collection.

The average hire period isΒ two weeks, but it depends on the pace of the job. We'll work around your schedule.

What Can You Put in a RoRo?

RoRo bins can take most construction and demolition waste, including:

  • Bricks, concrete, and rubble
  • Timber and wood
  • Metal and steel
  • Plasterboard and drywall
  • Mixed construction waste
  • Soil and hardcore (depending on disposal route)

What can't go in:

  • Hazardous materials (asbestos, chemicals, solvents)
  • Electrical items
  • Tyres
  • Gas canisters
  • Liquids or paints

If you're not sure whether something can go in, ask us before loading. Getting it wrong can delay disposal and add cost.

How Does Pricing Work?

RoRo pricing isn't one-size-fits-all. It depends on three things:

1. Location Where the bin's going and where the waste is being taken. London postcodes vary.

2. Material type This is the big one. What you're putting in the bin affects the cost significantly.

  • Clean timber/wood - typically the cheapest to dispose of
  • Mixed/general construction waste - sits in the middle
  • Plasterboard - most expensive due to disposal regulations

If you can segregate your waste on site, you can often reduce costs. A bin full of clean wood is cheaper to dispose of than a bin full of mixed materials with plasterboard mixed in.

3. Hire duration Longer hires may cost more, but entirely depends on the length you need it for.

We'll give you a clear price upfront based on your postcode, material type, and how long you need it.

RoRo vs Skip: When Does a RoRo Make More Sense?

A standard skip (up to 16 yards) works well for most jobs. But there's a tipping point where a RoRo becomes the smarter choice.

Choose a RoRo when:

  • You're generating more waste than a 14-16 yard skip can handle
  • You'd need multiple skip collections over the course of the job
  • You're working on a demolition or large-scale strip-out
  • You've got space on site for a larger container
  • You want fewer collections and less disruption

Stick with a skip when:

  • The job is smaller (single-room renovation, garden clearance)
  • You're tight on space
  • You need a bin on a public road (RoRos typically need off-street access)

If you're on the fence, call us. We'll help you figure out which option makes more sense for the job and the site.

Do You Need a Permit for a RoRo?

RoRo bins are large - they almost always need to go on private land.

That means:

  • Inside a site compound
  • On a yard or private access road
  • Within the footprint of a construction site

If you're placing one on a public road (rare, but occasionally possible), you'd need council permission - and potentially traffic management depending on the location.

Most RoRo hires don't involve permits because the bin stays on site property. But if you're unsure about access, we can advise when you call.

What Projects Are RoRos Best Suited For?

Demolition Whole buildings, internal strip-outs, structural removals. Demolition generates heavy, bulky waste quickly - a 40 yard RoRo can handle what would take four or five standard skips.

Large Renovations Full house renovations. Commercial refits. Multi-room gutting jobs. When you're ripping out kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, walls -it adds up fast.

Construction Projects New builds generate waste at every stage - groundworks, framing, fit-out. A RoRo on site for the duration keeps things tidy and avoids constant skip swaps.

Site Clearances End-of-project cleanups. Clearing out before handover. Getting rid of accumulated waste, offcuts, packaging, and debris.

If you're managing a job that ticks any of these boxes, a RoRo is usually the most efficient option.
